THE owner of a riding school near Selby has been prosecuted for operating the business without a licence.
Louise Harrison, who runs West Bank Riding Stables at Carlton, told magistrates in Selby she had filled in the forms for a licence and insurance, but had not proceeded because she did not believe that she had enough horses.
She also told the court yesterday that she had now applied for a licence and her stables had been visited by vets and she was acting on their recommendations in order to obtain her licence.
A spokesman for Selby District council said it took a “serious view of the fact that the public could be endangered by illegal businesses providing services which are uninsured and unregulated”.
Harrison was given a conditional discharge for 18 months and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £140.
