Winner: Jeff Wall
Runners Up: John Targett, Simon and Lesley Hyde, Maxine Daly
Once again, our judges had a tough time compiling a shortlist for this category, because all nominees had shown such incredible dedication to their families.
John Targett donated almost half his liver to save his 20- month-old grandson Owen from a potentially-fatal disease, and also helped look after his granddaughter while Owen’s parents were visiting the hospital.
Simon and Lesley Hyde were nominated by Simon’s mother, Margaret, for the strength they showed when their seven-year-old son, Freddie, was diagnosed with Leukaemia.
Maxine Daly, of Clifton, was nominated by her daughter Natalie, for her help and strength while Rosalia was in hospital undergoing a string of operations to remove a tumour from her chest.
But it was Jeff Wall’s tale of strength and determination despite life-changing illness and tragic loss that touched the hearts of the panel.
His daughter Rebecca said that despite the murder of her brother Daniel, and suffering various health problems, Jeff was “an inspiration”, and “always fought to support our family and give us the strength to go on”.
Jeff took to the stage and was overcome with tears as he accepted his award, but said: “It’s so humbling. It was just a matter of digging deep. I feel so humbled to be here, after hearing the stories of some of these kids.”
