I WORKED as a traffic policeman in the 1970s from Northallerton covering the A19 from Yarm to Thirsk when it was converted to dual carriageway, mainly because of chemical and steel lorries from Teesside to the A1 South.

The A19 Thirsk to York remains a single carriageway, with Thormanby village having a 30mph speed limit and Easingwold now having a bypass, which I covered in the 1980s.

Dr Chandak’s idea of banning lorries between 6am to 9am beggars belief (Letters, October 13). Lorries are the lifeline of our country, carrying goods to factories and shops to keep people in employment. The A19 is busy, but lorries travel with the flow of traffic at reasonable speeds.

Dr Chandak says are people running late, trying to make up time and are unable to overtake.

Suggestion: study the Highway Code, set off from home maybe 15 minutes earlier, relax and stay within the speed limits.
