NEWLY-PROMOTED City of York Hockey Club Men’s I are finding their feet in the North League premier division after a 0-0 draw at Formby I.

After losing their opening two matches, fourth-from-bottom York beat Leeds University before taking a point from in-form Formby.

City of York started brightly, with Alex Cockram creating early problems for the Formby defence, but they were unable to make the most of their chances in the first period.

After the break, Stuart Smyth made some fantastic runs through the Formby midfield.

Despite being reduced to ten men with five minutes remaining, York went closest to snatching the win when a Lee Cuff reverse stick effort just missed the far post.

City of York II suffered a crushing 11-3 defeat at Driffield I in the Yorkshire League premier division.

York had no answer to the slick hockey of the hosts, and only goals by Phil Worrall, Dan Elwood and Josh Longster brought any measure of satisfaction to the visitors.

City of York III slumped to an 8-2 home defeat by Bradford I in division one.

Tim Lister scored for York in the first half, but Bradford led 3-1 at the break.

Bradford added three more goals before Greg Sykes doubled City’s tally.

Even after a player was yellow-carded, Bradford bagged another two goals, and would have added more had it not been for an excellent display by ’keeper Brian Ignjatovic.

Lister also turned out for City of York IV, scoring a hat-trick as they beat visitors Tadcaster Magnets I 5-1 in division three.

Alex Lewis laid on an opening goal for Tim Lister and he added a second from a narrow angle before half-time.

After the break, Lister completed his hat-trick before Greg Sykes and Dominic Firth got on the scoresheet.

In division five north, City of York V lost 2-1 to Ben Rhydding VI.

City trailed 2-0 before David Cook pulled a goal back from the final short corner of the game.

City of York VI took on Ben Rhydding V in the same division and restored some club pride with a 4-1 win.

City opened the scoring with a short corner strike by Denis Hooton and that was followed by a similar strike from debutant Tony Brimble. In the second half, Mark Moisley added a third and yet another short corner was put away by Ed Marsden before the hosts got a late consolation.

A poor first half put paid to City of York VII’s challenge at home to Driffield II in division five north.

They trailed 4-0 at the interval and, although Pat Birch scored yet another blinding goal, the loss of injured Dave Ewing at the back saw Driffield add two more goals.

A fine performance earned City of York X (Badgers) a 2-0 victory at Rotherham.

After eight minutes, Andrew Abell stole the ball and walked through the Rotherham defence before scoring with a powerful shot.

Four minutes later, a goalmouth scramble ended with James Fitton claiming York’s second goal.

York goaltender Tom Starbuck kept Rotherham at bay to finish with a third successive clean sheet.
