THREE generations of head girls have been recognised at York’s Joseph Rowntree School.

Laura Eden, who was head girl at the school from 2010-11 and has now just started in the Sixth Form, revealed to staff that her mother and grandmother had also been head girls at schools elsewhere when they were young.

Her grandmother, Barbara Petitt, held the position at Rothwell Grammar School, between Leeds and Wakefield, in 1950-51, while Laura’s mother, Diane Eden, was head girl at Ashfields Secondary Modern School from 1980-81.

Laura’s duties as head girl included reporting any issues or problems to staff or bringing them up at Student Council meetings and making a speech at a Celebration Of Achievement Evening and representing the school at open days, parents’ evenings and event nights.

Head teacher Maggi Wright, speaking after all three generations were invited to the school, said: “How special it was to celebrate three generations of head girls and a lovely way to pay tribute to Laura’s contribution as head girl at the school.”
