IT’S confusing keeping up with Mr Anderson. First he leaves Suede and forms The Tears with former band member Bernard Butler, then flies solo before reforming Suede – all the while releasing this latest lone CD.

Black Rainbows was put together before Brett decided Suede mark II might be a going concern, which perhaps explains the return to rock form; guitars, driving drums and soaring vocals – complete with trademark sneer. Anderson says he would like to record new work with Suede, and if this ten-track collection is anything to go by, it would be worth hearing.

Highlights here include the single, Brittle Heart, although when Anderson sings about “ashtray eyes” and “carpet burns” it’s a timewarp moment. There are still troubled girls to save (“step off the break you’re a crash about to happen”) and love and life exist in mutual torment.

There’s no sign this brand of bedsitland Brit Pop is heading for its mug of cocoa anytime soon.
