York Central MP Hugh Bayley attended a chess training day at Clifton Green Primary School in York.

The aim of the day was to provide chess training for young players of any ability.

Many English Chess Federation coaches, including Sabrina Chevannes, a fide master, were there. Chess is popular in York and played in more than ten schools across the city.

York Chess Club has 60 senior members and 20 junior members. Last season the club won the Yorkshire League Woodhouse Cup. Junior members took part in the British Championship in Sheffield last month and York member Jean Luc Weller qualified for the main event.

Mr Bayley said: “The training day gives young members a chance to talk with some of the top British coaches to improve their skills. I am hoping to pick up some tips from the coaches.”
