IT HAS two world-famous breweries and plenty of drinking dens – but Tadcaster has failed to make a single entry in the latest edition of a prestigious pub guide.

The town, which is synonymous with the production of beer, has this year been snubbed by the Good Beer Guide 2012, which is produced annually and based on the votes of members of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).

Last year, The Angel And White Horse was the only pub representing the town. However, it has now slipped from the guide.

York CAMRA chairman, Matthew Grant said Tadcaster had missed out to some strong competition from pubs outside the town.

“Any pub that serves real ale is eligible but each region has an allocated number of pubs,” he said. “For example York has an allocation of ten pubs and Tadcaster has about six or seven.”

He said the town lost out to other pubs in its area such as the Sun Inn at Colton and the Boot And Shoe at Barkston Ash.

Fellow CAMRA member and Tadcaster Town Councillor, Steve Cobb, said: “The Angel And White Horse came within a whisker of getting in after getting in last year.

“I feel there are a number of pubs in Tadcaster which I frequent that serve good beer.”

One Tadcaster pub manager, Cath Jones, of the Leeds Arms in York Road, said: “There are not many pubs that are open; they are all closed down.

“The Coach And Horses has closed and we don’t know why, and The White Swan.

“We are a busy pub and try everything we can.

“We have bingo, pool and darts and this weekend we are having a 1940s night .”

The Good Beer Guide 2012 is available now, published by CAMRA books.
