NEW ramped gateways will be installed at York railway station to improve access for cyclists.
Train operator East Coast will install one ramp at Leeman Road, which will link to the pathway next to the riverside cycle route, which connects the city centre with the Clifton area.
A second ramp will be installed from Lowther Terrace into the station’s long stay car park, improving access from Holgate Road.
The £500,000 investment has been funded by the train operator, with Cycling City York and City of York Council.
Councillor Dave Merrett, City of York Council cabinet member for city strategy, said: “These new accesses to the station are a tremendous step forward for walking and cycling in York, allowing people to cycle to the station without having to negotiate the difficult road conditions outside the station frontage.
“I would like to thank East Coast for making this long overdue improvement happen, and hope that many more rail commuters will try out cycling or walking to and from the station as a result.”
Access to the ramps will be controlled by gates, which will be open from 5.30am to 10.30pm, seven days a week, and East Coast is also hoping to install 36 new bike stands at the station.
