A NEW generation of pupils at an overcrowded school near York could enjoy future lessons in modern, spacious surroundings.

A proposal to expand Wheldrake Primary School looks set to win support at a meeting on Thursday, paving the way for a major fundraising drive to begin.

Planning officers are recommending members of the City of York East Area planning committee to back the application for the village school.

Helen Rodbourn, head teacher, said these were exciting times for the 210-pupil school, which hoped to see work on the building project start in the new year.

She said: "Wheldrake Primary School was built in the early 1970s. The expansion of the village has meant it is now overcrowded and greatly in need of refurbishment to meet the needs of the new generation of pupils."

The alterations will add three new classrooms, remodel the interior, and provide disabled access with new toilets and a lift to the first floor.

She said: "We are hoping to increase community use by the provision of a public library."

The school has come under fire from environmental champion and former school governor Coun Christian Vassie for missing an opportunity by not including plans for a wind turbine.

He said that in a recent energy survey, 78 per cent of villagers expre-ssed their wish to see a turbine at the school.

However, Mrs Rodbourn said the changes would make "a huge improvement in energy efficiency" through the installation of a new energy-efficient boiler and controllable zoned heating system.

There will also be improved insulation as the new part of the building will use natural wool insulating materials.

She also highlighted the funding difficulties facing the school, which has to raise nearly £90,000 towards the cost of the expansion.
