THE eyes and hearts of the world will be focused on New York today as the city remembers 9/11 - the terrorist atrocity which rocked the globe exactly five years ago.
Almost 3,000 people died when hijacked aircraft were flown into the twin towers of New York's World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.
The horror and its aftermath caused international outrage, condemnation and fear as the world changed forever and put the west on permanent terror alert.
Who will ever forget the graphic video footage and photographs of that fateful day?
But the victims - 67 of whom were British - will be remembered on both sides of the Atlantic today. They will be low-key remembrance services - both at Ground Zero itself and outside the American Embassy in London. We hope the families who lost loved ones will by now be coming to terms with the tragedy, though they may never make any sense of it.
