YOUNGSTERS at a York school have been sharing their culinary secrets with the public as part of an ambitious project.

The seven pupils in Class Eight at Hob Moor Oaks School shop for, prepare, and cook their own lunch every Friday as part of the school curriculum.

They came up with the idea of turning the fruits of their labour into a cookery book called Fabulous Friday Food.

Teaching assistant Gemma Scoreby said the youngsters chosen their favourite recipes and raised the money to have 50 copies printed. She said: “The cookery classes are a fun way for the pupils to learn important life skills, use literacy and numeracy and improve communication skills and the children have had a great time putting the book together.

“We have just sold our last copy and we hope others will enjoy cooking and eating some of our favourite recipes. We are so proud of what the class has achieved.

“We would like to give special thanks to the staff and customers at Sainsbury’s Monks Cross for giving us help to finance this cook book by allowing us to do a ‘bag pack’ at the store. The staff were really helpful and friendly. We would also like to thank Wood Richardson printers in York for printing the cook book for us.”

The books sold for £3.50 from the school reception and the money raised is going towards commissioning a class photograph and a celebratory meal out.

Some of the recipes in the book include a zingy lime and coconut cheesecake; Christmas chutney and their own version of Eton Mess.

Meanwhile, Hob Moor Oaks and Hob Moor School have been presented with their inclusion award recognising the work the federation of the two schools does to include all children.
