Further to your article on July 4 (Hip support group pushes for medical help), we would like to point out that the allegation that DePuy’s Corail Hip System is “subject to official scrutiny that could see it withdrawn” is not correct.

To be very clear, the Corail Hip System is not currently subject to any recall whatsoever, nor is it subject to a market withdrawal.

DePuy stands firmly behind the Corail Hip System and is proud that it has helped relieve pain and restore mobility to so many people since it was introduced for clinical use in 1986.

The Corail Hip System has been cleared for sale by regulators around the world and is backed by more than 20 years of clinical data that has consistently shown that it is a safe and effective option for patients who need hip replacements. Clinical evidence shows that 98 per cent of Corail implants are still in place ten years after surgery, significantly higher than the benchmark of 90 per cent at ten years set by the UK National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), and survivorship of 96.8 per cent at 20 years.
