YORKSHIRE’S biggest celebration of farming and countryside life got under way today with tens of thousands of people expected to make the trip to our region for the spectacle.

Organisers of the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate said entries to the agricultural show had hit an “all-time high” with 12,713 competitors expected over the next three days.

Final preparations were under way yesterday as thousands of exhibits and stalls were put up, while livestock arrived, including ovina diva Lady Baa-Baa.

One of the highlights of the programme will be the attendance tomorrow of the The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

Bill Cowling, honorary show director said: “Their knowledge and enthusiasm for farming and rural life is well known, and their visit will make the show particularly special. We look forward to welcoming them.”

Other famous visitors include Channel Four’s Kirstie Allsopp, Yorkshire author Gervase Phinn and Michelin-starred chef James Mackenzie of the Pipe and Glass in South Dalton.

Events throughout the three days include the Food Hall, showcasing the region’s best food and drink, international sheep shearing competitions, showjumping and demonstrations of country crafts, such as building a dry-stone wall.
