A RACEGOER was attacked in York in what police have called a “vicious” assault.

The 26-year-old from Warwickshire was attacked from behind after leaving Voodoo Lounge on Swinegate and wandering into a secluded court yard at about 12.20am on Saturday.

He was knocked to the ground and kicked in the head and body, suffering severe bruising to his face. The attacker suspect stole his grey suit jacket.

DC Mike Avison, of York CID, said: “This was a vicious incident and the sooner the suspect is arrested and brought to justice the better for all concerned.

“I am hoping people will recall seeing the victim who was dressed in a two piece grey suit.

“Crucially, I also need to hear from anyone who possibly saw a man carrying a grey jacket or knows where he or the jacket is now.”

Police are checking CCTV and have asked anyone with information to phone them on 0845 6060247, quoting reference 12110113318, or to phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

James Brennan, spokesman for York Racecourse said more than 40,000 people attended the John Smith Cup raceday on Saturday, making it one of the fifth best attended events.

He said the event had attracted a “fun-loving” crowd, and once again four North Yorkshire trainers had successes during the day.
