Clifton Cycling Club are holding their annual road race day on Sunday.

Riders will battle it out over a hilly, demanding circuit near North Newbald, with distances ranging from a testing 33 miles to a gruelling 50 miles. The morning event sees a veterans race for riders aged 40 and over.

Clifton rider Dave Cook joins the over-60s group alongside more than 20 other competitors, including six riders aged over 70.

In the afternoon, 60 riders will battle it out over the longer distance with two Clifton riders, Tom Flemming and Paul Musgrave, taking on many of the region’s top talents.

Flemming said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to race locally with some of the region’s best. It’s going to be a tough challenge but a great race to watch.” Meanwhile, Tejvan Pettinger and Jess Bacon were the winning riders at Clifton CC’s annual 13-mile open time trial in Whenby.

Riding for the Sri Chimnoy Cycling team, Pettinger clocked the fastest men’s time of 29 minutes 28 seconds, 55 seconds in front of second-placed Mark Wolstenholme.

Bacon won the women’s prize 35-17. Team-mate Toby Everett took the junior event in 36-10.

There was a strong turnout of 41 riders aged from 14 to 60-plus, many of whom were doing their first ever time trial.
