PUPILS from one York school have lent a green helping hand to create sustainable eco-areas at another school in the city.

Almost 30 Year 11 St Peter’s School pupils and staff took part in the project, organised by conservation charity BTCV, at St Barnabas Primary School, off Leeman Road.

They created a sensory maze, using plants with pleasant smells such as lavender and herbs, and also ones with silky or furry leaves which are good to touch.

The pupils also created a “learning fence”, with giant leaf shapes to help pupils learn to identify leaves and trees. Another group built a large “bug hotel” made out of recycled pallets, while a fourth group made a natural barrier to one of the mini nature reserve areas already in existence in the school.

They were also joined by visiting exchange pupils from Walt Whitman High School, Maryland, in the United States.
