LIKE David Quarrie, we have travelled around a bit and been surprised and pleased at the litter-free streets, shops and outside areas, so unlike far too many places in this country (Letters, June 24).

Perhaps I am harping on a theme, but I truly believe that much of the problem is caused by people’s bad upbringing. We have visited many restaurants and cafés abroad and have been amazed at how well-behaved children are; families, even large ones including children of different ages, are quiet, polite and helpful to each other, so unlike those who eat out in this country – loud, out of control and most upsetting to other customers. Sometimes when having a meal abroad, surrounded by well-behaved local families, I have felt ashamed when a British family comes along and brings with it the proof that far too many British mothers let their children down.

I have no statistics to hand, but I would bet that we have more feckless, careless, slatternly mothers than any other country.

Children who come from untidy, disorganised homes are far more likely to be careless when outdoors.
