A CITY of York Council chief says it is considering allowing employees to use council vehicles for commuting only when it is essential for their work.

Geoff Derham, transport and fleet services project manager, said it was consulting with unions over the proposals, under which staff who were allowed to use such vehicles for commuting would foot the cost of fuel between home and work themselves.

He was speaking after council leader James Alexander revealed up to 200 employees were using council vehicles to commute to and from work, with the taxpayer footing the fuel bill of about £150,000.
