ABOUT 400 children are expected to take part in New Earswick All Blacks ARLC's annual gala this weekend.

Seven-a-side junior rugby league action was to take place today and tomorrow, from about 10.30am to 4.30pm each day, covering age groups from emerging 8s to under-14s.

It was expected that five or six clubs from all over Yorkshire, including York outfits the All Blacks, York Acorn and Heworth, would compete at each age level in round robin formats.

The All Blacks' annual gala is not only great fun for the youngsters but is also key to the club's financial health.

Club chairman Charles Rollinson said: "Without the galas, we could not exist financially. It's our biggest fund-raiser of the year and its success is vital to us."

Along with the rugby action, there will also be stalls, a barbecue and various games and attraction.
