NESTL Rowntree Athletics Club's junior team just missed out on promotion to the Northern Premier Division.

Although they fought hard in the play-off meet, they fell short of the top two places which went to winners Edinburgh with Glasgow second.

These squads, which were combined teams of the clubs in the Scottish cities, proved too strong on the day with the North Wales combination team finishing third and Rowntree coming a creditable fourth.

Rowntree chairman Paul Taylor said: "We knew it was going to be very tough against the Scottish teams and the Welsh team.

"However, our teenagers performed extremely well and demonstrated we are able to compete as a club at this level.

"We were missing some athletes due to holidays and they would certainly have strengthened our team further but full credit to the Scottish teams who turned out in force.

"This was our first promotion match for a number of years and we will certainly be aiming for this level again next year when the vast majority of the athletes are still young enough to compete in this age group."

Jess Taylor was the star of the York show, winning the 200 metres and 100m hurdles.

The full results were: Edinburgh 586, Glasgow 495, North Wales 424, Nestl Rowntree 396, Rotherham 362, Liverpool P&S 304, Cheshire Tigers 298, Spenborough 282.

The York-based club now has to pick itself up for a further promotion match today at Cleckheaton where they will be battling in the senior age group for promotion to the Northern Premier League.

Several of the junior ranks will be turning out for what should be a strong team to take on Blackburn, Bingley, Bolton, Wigan, Rotherham, Boston and Middlesbrough.
