Candlesticks, cigarette cases and trombones “float” in a new piece of artwork at St Mary’s Church, in York.

More than a thousand items were flattened by a steamroller by artist Cornelia Parker to create the Thirty Pieces Of Silver installation.

Ms Parker said: “Thirty Pieces Of Silver is about materiality and then about anti-matter.”

It also holds religious references. Judas was given 30 pieces of silver for betraying Jesus, while objects from the Last Supper, like cutlery and dinner plates, hang in the installation.

Jennifer Alexander, assistant curator of fine art , said: “It is fantastic to see this remarkable work in the beautiful surroundings of York St Mary’s.”
