IT would be wise for Hugh Bayley to keep very quiet about pensions altogether (Labour's Done A Lot For OAPs, August 28).

Our professional MPs (most have a job for life) enjoy the best final salary scheme in the country - building one-fortieth of their final salary for every year of service.

If Hugh took early retirement this November, he would have completed a mere 14 years in his post. This would equate to a pension of roughly £21,000 per annum (based on his new salary of £60,277 from November 1).

Of course, Hugh is probably going to go for the maximum two-thirds of final salary - another ten years (two elections) in post will give him a final index-linked pension of around £40,000 per annum.

No wonder most pensioners (and those working towards one) simply do not have time for MPs when they pronounce on this subject.
