UPDATE: 1.10pm

Official confirmation of the turnout in Selby has been announced by Martin Connor, returning officer as 44.1%, just over 2007's turnout.

Speculation amongst the candidates is that the rise is due to people turning out for the AV referendum.

Meanwhile, counting has begun in earnest, with a 'grass skirt' system in use, with ballot papers being taped to a large sheet for ease of counting and recording.

Roderic Parker, sole Liberal Democrat candidate in the Selby district, said he had encountered the "usual mix" of voters, who mostly voted Labour or Conservative, but felt their record in local government was better representation than the national picture: "In other areas, we have a good track record in local government, but we haven't managed to get councillors to stand in the Selby area.

"We didn't expect it to be a night of triumph for the party, but we have been through highs and lows before. In the long term, the coalition will prove its worth."

UPDATE: 11.20am

More than 80 official counters are still verifying the ballot boxes from yesterday's elections in Selby.

The lengthy process is due to the separation of District and Parish voting cards as well as the AV Referendum votes.

Confidence is already high among the candidates, with many already watching the process in sports hall of the Abbey Leisure Centre.

Labour candidate Steve Shaw-Wright said he would be keeping a keen eye on the Selby West ward, which has historically swung between Conservative and Labour control.

He said: "It's particularly interesting for me not only because Labour have a couple of strong candidates, but also because one of them is my wife.

"On the whole though, we're feeling pretty good about the voting turnout, but a lot of people weren't too interested in the AV referendum."

Conservative candidate, and current council leader Mark Crane said: "By the look of the tables, just roughly speaking, there appears to be a strong conservative turnout. I think it looks really positive for us."

A great deal of interest has also been raised by the candidates in the outcome of York's elections, with a feeling that the Liberal Democrats could lose control of the council.
