COUNCIL bosses have vowed to fight to redevelop a North Yorkshire car park after a brewery giant launched a legal challenge to their plans.

Selby District Council granted permission for an upgrade of the central area car park in Tadcaster earlier this month, but Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery tabled an objection, which may now lead to a judicial review.

The council is aiming to carry out a string of improvements, including resurfacing work, which they say would make it easier and safer for drivers and draw more people into the centre of the town.

But the council says its attempts to move the scheme forward have been “repeatedly stifled” by Samuel Smith’s during a “protracted battle”.

Council chief executive Martin Connor said: “Yet again we’re being taken through a legal process we believe is unnecessary, costly for the public purse and which goes against the needs of people living in Tadcaster and the surrounding villages.

“We don’t believe the process we’ve been through in granting planning permission for these improvements is flawed and we will fight this judicial review. We want to do what is right for the people of Tadcaster, and that is to provide a decent car park.

“This is about supporting the future of the town, but once again we face a legal battle.”
