York Indoor Bowls Club’s league play-off finals produced a thriller in the veterans’ pairs.

Tony Moore’s team looked to have the game sewn up rallying from 7-3 down to lead 15-8. But in a roller-coaster tussle Ray Calpin’s team won all three final ends to win 19-17 and take the title for the sixth year running.

Alec Giles’s team got off to a good start in the bid to retain the vets’ triples title as they led 5-2.

But four winning ends bringing eight shots put Fred Clayden’s side into a 10-5 lead and his trio never loooked back to gain a 13-11 win.

A sixth appearance in the last six vets’ fours finals for Bill Hedison still produced anguish.

Despite a solid rally to erase a 5-1 deficit, Hedison’s rink were reeled in again by Dennis Haw’s team, whose 11 unanswered shots underpinned an eventual 18-12 conquest.

Dot Kennelly and Linda Harrison lost the first end of their ladies’ pairs duel against Maureen Walker and Joan Jackson.

But they only lost one more out of the next 11 to lead 17-2. Though Walker and Jackson took three off the next four, a single on the 17th end sealed Kennelly’s team their first win since 2005.

Linda Parker’s team led 3-0 after two ends in the ladies’ triples before Carol Instone’s side won all but three of the remaining ends to take the title 22-6.

The mixed pairs final was evenly poised as Clayden and Helen Walker, representing Brenda Martin’s team, picked up a single to level at 7-7 but a run of five winning ends out of the next six virtually sealed the title for Melanie and Graham Brooke, who were playing for Tony Moore’s side.

A one-sided game graced the mixed fours in which June Clayton’s team, one-shot winners in their semi-final, grabbed all but four ends against Eric Hodgson’s side for a 30-8 win.

Another one-sided game took place in the mixed triples where Mark Clarke’s team had the game wrapped up by the 12th end against Paul Humphreys’ team.

Humphreys’ team responded by picking up the gents’ triples title 16-11 over Kevin Harris’ team, who atoned by seizing the gents’ pairs crown as 21-12 victors over Dudley Williams’ side.

York IBC hold their presentation night next Thursday at 6.30pm. The guest of honour is England team manager John Bell.

He will play matches lasting five ends against the club’s under-18s singles champion Laura Clarke, ladies champion Zoe Eagles, gents’ and Under-25s champion Adam Liddell and a member of the club whose name will be drawn on the night.

A pie and peas supper at £3 is available but must be booked before the evening at the office.
