A LETTER from the Green Party election candidate said the Greens were showing “opposition to cuts” (Letters, April 19).
However, Green Party plans for the recent council budget would have seen millions of pounds worth of cuts to this city, a “shrinking of working hours” as well as a “five per cent salary drop for council staff earning more than £30,000 a year” (The Press, February 24). This would have been carried out without consultation with trade unions.
The Green Party candidate said “we elect out councillors and not our council.” In fact, we elect both; the number of councillors for each party is important to who takes control of this council.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats will not rule out a coalition with the Conservatives beyond May (The Press, January 26), and Labour requires six extra seats to stop the coalition in Downing Street coming to your street.
As a vegetarian of 15 years, I am passionate and concerned about the environment, animal welfare and climate change. So it is with a heavy heart that I must say, Green Councillors are now a luxury we in York can no longer afford.
Dan Sidley, Labour Candidate for Fishergate, York.
