OFFICIALS at York City FC have hit out at the behaviour of Luton Town’s manager, after two stewards were injured during the teams’ match at Bootham Crescent.

One steward reportedly broke a finger and another was apparently elbowed as they tried to restrain Luton boss Gary Brabin, following an outburst during York City’s 1-0 victory on Tuesday night.

The Football Association are now said to be investigating following the incident 41 minutes into the game, when Mr Brabin was sent from the dugout after he objected to a challenge by York player Scott Kerr, which referee Steve Smith punished with a yellow card.

Mr Brabin clashed with City assistant manager Darron Gee and, having been warned about his conduct earlier, was ordered out of the dugout.

The former Doncaster Rovers midfielder was then involved in a melee with stewards, who were assigned to escort him off the pitch and more scuffles followed in the players’ tunnel. Visiting captain George Pilkington was also cautioned after he left the field to intervene in the skirmish.

A spokesperson for York City yesterday said: “We are alarmed and disappointed by the scenes at the game.

“It is clear that Luton Town manager Gary Brabin behaved inappropriately and was sent into the dressing rooms and had to be restrained by stewards.

“This is something we do not want to see at York City Football Club and we are sorry if the scenes caused distress to any of our supporters.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers from North Yorkshire Police are aware of a pitch-side incident which took place during the York City v Luton Town football match on Tuesday.

“No formal complaints have been made to North Yorkshire Police following the incident. The matter is being dealt with by the Football Association.”

The Press contacted Luton Town for a comment but received no response.

• In a separate incident which took place outside the ground a 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of using threatening behaviour. He was given a penalty notice for disorder before being released.
