THE MAYOR of Pocklington, who has been injured in an industrial accident, will stay in hospital for another week.

Coun Martin Cooper, of Barmby Road in Pocklington, had hoped to be released following a skin graft at Leeds General Infirmary on Monday, but a CT scan then showed up a problem with the bones in his injured arm.

Coun Cooper said he was still waiting for further information and inspection of his bones to see what was wrong, but he expected to have to remain in hospital until the middle of next week.

He said: "I'm still quite philosophical about it. If I go home I would do a little more than I'm supposed to do. At the end of the day it's my arm and I want to make sure it's repaired to its best.

"You've just got to get on with life and make the best of it."

Coun Cooper was airlifted to hospital by Yorkshire Air Ambulance after getting his left arm caught in an industrial printer at his employers, East Riding Sacks, at Full Sutton on Monday last week.

He said he did not remember how he became trapped in the machine, but that two heavy rollers pulled his skin off and he could not get his arm out.

Coun Cooper was upbeat after the accident and praised fast-acting colleagues who stopped the machine and fire crews who cut him out of the printer. He said the family business, where he had worked for 28 years, had been supportive and he could still move his fingers.

East Riding Sacks and the Health and Safety Executive have both launched investigations into the incident.
