Lib Dem Councillor Nigel Ayre says Liberal Democrat councillors have been fighting to protect the green belt from development for many years (Letters, April 13).
I am sure residents who live near Derwenthorpe, Heslington East and Germany Beck would disagree.
Nigel says the Labour group have been dismissive of residents’ views over the green belt. This is not true. York does not have a defined green belt or an agreed planning framework and this is why Liberal Democrats can continue to progress development in the green belt.
After almost 20 years, the council is set to submit a planning framework to the Government that will protect the green belt. York’s Economic Partnership, Without Walls Partnership, Chamber of Commerce and Labour disagrees with the housing numbers and council officers have said the plan being submitting is “unsound”.
The Government will therefore reject this plan and delay the defining of the green belt once again. This will allow more green belt development and increase costs to the council taxpayer. Labour wants to see York’s green belt properly defined and protected.
Coun James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council’s Labour opposition group.
