James Alexander, the local Labour leader (The Press, 15 April), stated that “we want York to be the number one destination for economic growth” and added “the biggest barrier to this happening is [a] lack of entrepreneurs and congestion (sic)”.
Entrepreneurs are important but attracting big business is vital. Does Mr Alexander agree? Probably not, as when the Starbucks in the station came under threat due to its prominent location, he referred to protecting our heritage and stated that: “We can’t let large multi-national companies jeopardise this” (The Press, July 20).
Two points. First, no company should threaten our heritage and perhaps Mr Alexander just could not resist a dig at big business. Second, Starbucks brings jobs and he should have been bending over backwards to successfully relocate them and not scoring points. York needs every job it can get and if Starbucks wants to sell coffee to people who have decided to go by train and not car, great.
