MEET two of the latest entrants to our contest to find York’s Adventurer Of The Year.

The Press and York’s new outdoor equipment retailer, GO Outdoors of Fossbank, launched a competition last month to discover the city’s most adventurous person.

We asked readers to send in pictures of themselves enjoying an outdoor “adventure” and explain why they think they should win the title, with the winner set to receive £250 of store vouchers and a plaque to be installed in the store marking their status.

Sam Ellis, 25, Heworth, was nominated by his sister Jessica, who says he has travelled the world, entering various kayaking/whitewater competitions and paddled the planet’s most dangerous rivers and waterfalls.

“He first started at York Canoe Club, which he still visits every now and again, giving up his time to teach and train youngsters to learn the sport he loves so much, telling them of his adventures in Africa, Canada, America and many other fascinating destinations boasting rivers like the White Nile and the Zambezi,” she said.

“About five years ago, he entered a competition in Thun, Switzerland, and was ranked 17th in the world of world’s best men’s whitewater kayakers,” she said.

Another entrant, keen sailor Michael Green, says he takes every opportunity to get out on the water whenever possible, and has sailed in Greece, Croatia, The Maldives and The British Virgin Islands.

“I have sailed from Whitby and Scarborough and on the Ouse,” said Michael, of Stockton Lane.

“I spend most of my time sailing in the UK in Scotland, which enables me to go to sleep and wake up in some of the most unspoilt and beautiful places in the world.

“I competed in the Round The Island Yacht Race (Isle Of Wight) in 2008 raising over £1,000 in aid of the Bryony Aveyard Wellchild Appeal.”

The deadline for entries to this contest is next Friday, April 29. A shortlist will then be drawn up by judges from GO Outdoors and The Press, from which a winner will be selected.
