A PROJECT to catalogue noises on the streets of the UK has so far included a handful of recordings from York and Selby.
The UK SoundMap is a 12-month project to map and preserve the “acoustic landscape” of the UK.
The project has already received 1,800 recordings from members of the public.
To provide a comparison between the sounds on today’s streets and older recordings, the archive also includes recordings from York in 1947, including the throaty-sounding engines of motor vehicles, a man whistling tunefully in the street as well as a genteel street busker.
The project, a collaboration between the British Library, the Noise Futures Network and Audioboo, concludes at the end of June, so the organisers are keen to encourage further contributions.
