A Selby business has decided to close its warehouse in the town, to ensure the survival of its main store.

The Furniture Warehouse, in New Lane, Selby, will close within months, with the loss of one permanent and one part-time position.

Tony Norton, director of Everatts, said the decision to close was economic, but not due to the recession.

Tony said: “We’re closing it because the lease is coming to an end in November, and we have people retiring.

“We are now getting furniture delivered to us in a week, so a warehouse isn’t really needed any more. We’re getting more efficient, as everyone needs to in these times.”

Two part-time employees at the warehouse were offered work at the main store on Gowthorpe, but took voluntary redundancy and early retirement.

Tony said: “It’s a reflection of the high street. It’s in trouble. The roadworks haven’t helped, but I’m afraid the problems of the high street are bigger than the council.”
