A SPATE of charity box thefts in the Selby area has been described by investigating police officers as “beyond belief”.

Thieves have smashed church windows and grabbed collection bottles, and in one case three boxes were taken from the counter of a post office in South Milford.

PC Jon Gregson, of Selby police, said: “Stealing from charity boxes really is a selfish, heartless act.

“It is beyond belief that someone would steal money which has been donated to charities which provide much needed support to vulnerable people.

“I am urging any businesses, churches, shops, pubs or other establishments which collect money for good causes, to ensure that they are well secured to the counter and if possible put away somewhere safe after closing time.”

The three charity boxes taken from the post office in South Milford were taken some time between April 2 and April 6, and contained donations to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, South Milford Church Fund and the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

On Tuesday, April 5, officers were told St Edward’s Church at Brotherton had been broken into overnight and a collection stolen.

About £100 was also stolen from Monk Fryston Church Hall, sometime between 1.15pm and 2pm on Friday, April 1, when the raiders smashed a glass door to gain entry.

PC Gregson said: “The public can help prevent further incidents by reporting any suspicious activity in places where charity boxes are kept.”

Anyone who can help the police with their enquiries is urged to contact PC Gregson, of Selby Police, on 0845 6060247, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
