DUNNINGTON have edged ahead of Poppleton in the race for the Tyke Petroleum Men's Tennis League division one title.

Dunnington made the most of their rivals' inactivity when beating relegated Wigginton 74-34 to go two points clear with one match to play - which is against Poppleton, who also have a game in hand.

Andy Peeke-Vout and John Sumner led the Dunnington charge with 28 and were well supported by Paul Birch and Matthew Stephenson's 26.

York finished their programme with a 69-39 win at Boston Spa which moved them into third place. York, led by Steve Smith and Howard Pallister's 26 games, won eight sets.

Copmanthorpe went top of division two with a 59-49 win against Sutton after being two down with 36 games to play. They managed to win 24 of those remaining games, with nine from top-scorers Alan Partington and Terry Hilbert (21) proving decisive.

Copmanthorpe meet second-placed Knaresborough, the only team to beat them this season, in their final match.

Poppleton 2 beat relegated Civil Service 60-48 with Ben Orton and John Schofield winning 23 games. Dunnington 2 made their position safe with a good 64-44 home victory against Wetherby Castlegarth which saw Mike Taylor and Chris Bowles win 28 games.

Appleton Roebuck ended their season as division three leaders by beating Cawood 61-47. Dave Bradley and John Giles were united for a 29-game finale to a successful year.

York 2 moved into third place in division four, beating Boston Spa 2, who are struggling for survival, 65-43. David Livsley and Matthew Walker were top-scorers with 29 games.

Rufforth's final game saw them lose 65-43 to Castlegarth.

Dunnington 3 lost their last match in division five to Poppleton 3 and are not totally safe from a place in the bottom two. Tony Hart and Brian Graystone were the best players with 26.

Escrick's decline continued in division six as they slumped to a third consecutive defeat, 57-51 to Wigginton 3. Eight down with one rubber to play, Escrick's 19 games were not enough to overhaul their opponents. Their first pair, John Hargreaves and Granville Mark, scored 22, as did Wigginton's David Crane and Mark Jeaves.

Bottom team Strensall 2 were crushed 85-23 by Wheldrake 2 with pairings Bob Ruston-David Butterworth and Stuart Paver-Colin Brooks each scoring 30 games.

Bubwith 2's superiority showed again in division seven with a 68-40 win against York 3.
