ONLY a politician (of sorts) could claim that increased winter fuel allowances provided in three consecutive years during 2008 to 2010 were a “one-off” and then go on to accuse someone in opposition of making claims that are “somewhat misleading” (Mark Waudby, Liberal Democrat candidate – Letters, April 5).
Perhaps similar misleading information caused confusion to the Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg when he went on radio following the 2011 Budget and misleadingly told listeners, “Firstly, I wouldn’t believe everything you read in the papers, I certainly don’t these days. Secondly, we have increased winter fuel payments.”
So Mark, I’m going to take Nick’s advice and not believe a word that any of the potential City of York Council candidates write in the paper in the run-up to the local council elections.
The fact of the matter is that this Coalition Government has slashed winter fuel allowances for pensioners and I’ll remember that and all those misleading comments on May 5.
