TRAFFIC could be banned from the centre of Ripon in a bid to prevent its historic cathedral being damaged further.
The governing body of Ripon Cathedral, the Chapter, says vibration and exhaust fumes from passing cars are harming the ancient church and wants to shut Minster Road to through traffic.
Its proposals would retain access to homes and local businesses.
The Chapter will hold a 12-week consultation after Easter before any application is submitted to the council, and it would initially look for a temporary closure. Ripon Civic Society has backed the plans.
