NORTH Yorkshire is among the top counties for bringing those guilty of domestic violence to justice.
Figures released by the Crown Prosecution Service show its North Yorkshire team of lawyers and legal workers gain convictions in more than 82 per cent of such cases, the third highest conviction rate in the country. The national average is 72 per cent. In 2009/10, it prosecuted 772 domestic violence cases.
In East Yorkshire and Humberside, in the same period, there were 894 convictions.
Xanthe Tait, the area’s deputy chief crown prosecutor, said: “These excellent results are the result of victims having the courage to come forward, the sterling work of our prosecutors and close co-operation with North Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police - as well as the support provided by independent domestic violence advisors and the work of our specialist domestic violence courts.”
