THE point of a monarchy in a modern state is that it should be far above petty things.

It should not only be above party politics, but also above commerce and public relations.

It should not accept, nor appear to accept, favours from anyone.

It is conceivable that so many prominent members of the Queen’s family should have independently decided to drive Audis.

Coincidences do happen.

But it looks a little too much like product placement, especially when an Audi executive has been invited to the royal wedding.

The motto on the Royal coat of arms is “Dieu et mon droit”, not “Vorsprung durch Technik”.
