DISABLED people in a York community who are wanting to grow their own food have been given a cash boost.

Funding from City of York Council’s Heworth ward committee has been used to create raised beds at Glen Allotments in Sixth Avenue, with the work being showcased at the site’s spring open day.

Tina Funnell, who is one of Labour’s three candidates for the ward at next month’s local elections, said: “Glen Allotments seeks to be a focal point for the local community, and this is a great initiative which will increase accessibility for those with mobility problems and allow them to enjoy the site and the fruits of their work. Tang Hall Primary School has an allotment here, so children are also able to see the benefits of growing their own food.”

Ruth Potter, who will also contest the seat for Labour alongside the party’s third candidate, Barbara Boyce, said: “Glen Allotments are very popular and I’m sure they will become more so as more people are given the opportunity to get involved.”

Update - 3 May 2011: We have been asked to point out that work to create a garden for children with special needs was funded by friends and associates of its designer, Mac Mitchell of Mitchell Landscape Designs, who provided their services on a voluntary basis.

Donations and sponsorship from local businesses provided some of the funding and Mr Mitchell would like to thank everybody who helped for their generosity.

Heworth ward committee funding has paid for raised beds at the allotments, which will increase accessibility for people with mobility problems.
