A FUNDRAISING Dragon Boat race in York has proved so popular that several potential entrants have had to be turned away.

Organisers the Rotary Club of York said the event, on Sunday, July 10, had drawn its maximum field of 36 teams.

Club President Graham Wilford said: “ Some hard decisions have had to be made and sadly we have had to return applications from several old friends and previous competitors.

“However, they have been directed towards the Rotary Dragon Boat event at Wakefield which is being organised on the previous Saturday.

The York race will include teams from the army and air force, event sponsors Shepherd Group, Benenden Healthcare and The Joseph Rowntree Trust. Meanwhile, the Jack Birch Unit at the University of York will be racing on behalf of York Against Cancer.
