HOSPITAL bosses in York have met the Shadow Health Secretary to discuss how Government plans to reform the NHS will affect services.

John Healey MP joined members of City of York Council’s Labour group to speak to representatives of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust ahead of next month’s local elections.

The NHS reorganisation would give GPs control of 60 per cent of its budget and allow more private firms to provide care, but the Government has now agreed a two-month “pause” to assess concerns over the plans.

Mr Healey said: “These are real-life issues which affect us all. York has a well-run hospital, but it is facing a tough year and my fear is patients across England will start to see our NHS go backwards under this Government.”

Labour group leader Coun James Alexander said: “My mother is waiting for a serious operation and the care she has received is excellent, but I fear for the future of such services in light of the Government’s reorganisation plans.”
