DOCTORS in North Yorkshire have welcomed a new law making it illegal for anyone under 18 to use sunbeds.

The law will help to reduce levels of skin cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in young people in the region, NHS North Yorkshire and York said.

Businesses that do not comply with the new Government regulations could face fines of up to £20,000.

Rachel Johns, associate director of public health at NHS North Yorkshire and York, said: “This new law will go some way to help reduce one of the biggest cancers among 15 to 24-year-olds.”

Food and safety officials from City of York Council’s will inspect premises with sunbeds for public use to ensure they are complying with the new law.
