A FORMER post office in the centre of York could be taken over by an estate agent which is looking to expand its business.

Bairstow Eves has applied to City of York Council to move into the building previously occupied by Walmgate post office, which stands next to the company’s current unit, and turn it into a letting agency.

If the move succeeds, the firm says it will create two extra jobs and that it will keep its existing premises in the street, with a statement submitted to the council saying the new strand of the business would concentrate on rental properties in the Walmgate and Hull Road areas.

The two units would be linked through double doors and Bairstow Eves also plans to upgrade the building, which it said had become “dilapidated”. Postal services in the street are now run from the nearby One Stop store.
