A YORK museum has marked the 550th anniversary of one of the bloodiest battles in the history of Britain.
York Archaeological Trust has opened an exhibition at its Micklegate Bar museum aimed at remembering the Battle of Towton.
The battle, between Lancastrian Henry VI and his Yorkist challenger Edward IV, saw more than 26,000 lives lost.
Now the exhibition has brought together details of the grim clash together with new artwork commissioned by the Trust and a film presented by historian Terry Deary.
Fans of Deary’s work also had the chance to question him at the Trust’s DIG attraction on Saturday.
“Micklegate Bar had an infamous role to play in the events leading up to and following Towton,” said Sarah Maltby, the Trust’s director of attractions.
“As the victorious Edward IV entered York after the battle, he found the heads of his father, brother and other prominent figures displayed there and at various places in York.”
The exhibition runs until October 30.
