COUNCILLORS in York have backed the city submitting a fresh bid to become a World Heritage Site.

York missed out on being included on a tentative list of potential UK nominations for the accolade last month, but has now set its sights on possibly making another attempt in the future.

A cross-party motion supporting the work of the World Heritage for York Steering Group was voted through at a full meeting of City of York Council last week, where members also encouraged the city to resubmit a bid for the status.

The steering group said comments made by an independent panel of experts had given them encouragement that a future submission may be successful, although York may have to wait as long as 22 years to be in a position to do this.

The panel’s report on York’s failed bid described it as “brave and original thinking” but that it had concentrated too much on York’s underground heritage and “ a nomination of the whole city above and below ground could be considered for a future tentative list”.
