A York pupil was shortlisted today for Amnesty International’s Young Human Rights Reporter Of The Year award.

Luke Walsh, ten, of Badger Hill Primary School, will now be put forward for final judging – the result of which will be announced at a prestigious ceremony on May 19.

Nearly 600 children from across the United Kingdom entered the competition, which is being run by Amnesty International UK and Learn newsdesk, the education arm of the Guardian website.

Children aged seven to 14 were asked to write an article or report of between 200 and 250 words on a human rights-related issue.

Andrea Hellam, head teacher at Badger Hill Primary School, said: “We are all very proud of Luke for his work in this area. Luke is a very conscientious pupil and always performs to the best of his ability.”

The winner’s work will be showcased at Amnesty’s annual Media Awards in central London in front of an audience of hundreds of journalists on May 24.
