YOUNG voters in Selby have been urged to take part in the upcoming district and parish council elections.

Polling will take place between 7am and 10pm at 76 polling stations across the district on May 5, and will give residents the chance to have their say on local government, and the Alternative Vote.

Katie Brelsford, 18, a Selby District Council employee, said: “It’s really important that people should use their vote as it is a way of voicing their opinions and getting involved. If you don’t vote, you just end up with everyone else’s choices. “Some people think young people don’t care about the issues but that just isn’t true. There are a lot of issues that concern young people and we have to make sure that our voices are heard.”

Electoral services officer Richard Besley said: “All it takes is a quick phone call or email to check we have the right details registered. If we don’t have the right details then you won’t get sent the correct polling card and you could lose your right to have your say.”
