PUPILS at a York school got their hands on some real moon rock.

Children at Woodthorpe Primary School marvelled at the iron-bearing meteorites and moon rock brought back to earth by astronauts in the 1970s.

They also gazed down a microscope at slices of the extraterrestrial rock so they could see the crystals and stone formation inside.

All the irreplaceable rocks were enclosed in special containers so they could be seen but not damaged. The visit was organised by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.
